Tidal

Tidal Power is arguably the best form of renewable energy generation. It runs to a precise clock and if generated sub-surface has a consistent strength, never being too strong as sometimes happens with wave and wind.

Over many years prototype tidal machines were smashed by the waves, but now one is operating in the Orkneys and this success is being mirrored in Wales, Somerset, and Merseyside.

Partly because of their location the Orkneys are already green! The Orkneys is now almost self-sufficient in renewable energy, but it will some years before tidal make any kind of impact on the UK’s energy needs.

The University of Edinburgh is doing magnificent work in making the machines used to gather the energy more efficient. They have recently received a share in a Government grant to develop the technology to support the target of Net Zero by 2050.

Also, over may years there has been research into sub-surface marine currents as these avoid severe shock impacts as can happen with surface waves in a gale.
